Short explanations of the terms that come up when setting up an IT project.

These pages explain the terms from the “The problem” section on the homepage. Each term has its own page: what it means, and what part of it belongs to the project on MainPath.

DNS
DNS turns a name like example.com into the address of the server.

Networking
Networking connects machines, services, and users.

Logging
Logging stores requests, errors, and what the app did, so you can read it later.

Kubernetes
Kubernetes starts and spreads containers across several machines.

Dev environments
The place where you write code and run it locally.

Monitoring
Monitoring shows whether servers and services are up, and how busy they are.

Storage
Storage is space for files, uploads, and backups, separate from the database.

Auth
Auth decides who can sign in and what that person is allowed to do.

Git hosting
Git hosting is where the repositories live. The pipeline starts from there.

Firewall
A firewall decides which connections to the server are allowed.

Docker
Docker packs the app into an image that runs the same locally and on the server.

Cron jobs
Cron jobs are tasks that run on a schedule, for example every night.

Backups
Backups are copies of the database and files you can restore.

SSL certificates
An SSL certificate makes the site available over HTTPS.

Infrastructure as code
Infrastructure as code describes servers, networks, and access as files in the repository.

CI/CD pipelines
A CI/CD pipeline tests, builds, and ships the app after every push.

Load balancer
A load balancer spreads incoming requests across several instances.

Secret management
Secret management keeps passwords, API keys, and tokens out of the repository.
